Will arrived in the village in September 2006, enrolling at Hollyoaks Community College. Shortly afterwards, he was recognised by Gilly Roach as a young Countdown champion in 2003, becoming uncomfortable as his 'child genius' reputation became common knowledge. The students moved into the Hall of Residence, only to discover the previous occupants had no intentions of moving out. Will began showing an over-protective side as he took a disliking to Joe Spencer for his treatment of Zoe Carpenter, as well as Jack Osborne for reprimanding Olivia Johnson for dropping a tray of drinks.
After Joe and Olivia died in The Dog in the Pond Explosion, Will attempted to win the affections of a grieving Zoe. After initially being turned down, Will sabotaged her friendships with Gilly and Zak Ramsey. However, Zoe was put off when Will got into a bar fight at The Loft.
