The Red Door was a book published by Ramsey Ley, revealing the results of an experiment of a nature vs. nurture upbringing for two children.
In 1994, Ley adopted Celeste and Toby Faroe, paying young father Felix Westwood £50,000 for the two children. Ley then proceeded to subject Toby to a childhood based on nature, keeping him locked in a room behind a red door by himself, whilst Celeste was nurtured. Celeste began secretly interacting with Toby in 2000, and in 2007, she snuck a pair of keys under the door so she and Toby could escape, taking a copy of The Red Door and burning the facility to the ground before they escaped.
In January 2020, Liberty purchased the book, which Toby and Celeste's biological mother Martine Deveraux and triplet brother Mitchell Deveraux found in September 2020.
Toby's poor upbringing resulted in Toby struggling with anger, control and trust issues. In April 2020, Toby beat his biological father Felix Westwood with a pipe and attempted to kill him in hospital. In September 2020, he attempted to kill Mitchell but discovered that he had murdered Lisa Loveday. In January 2021, Doctor Palmer found a copy of the book down the side of the chair, to which a paranoid Toby accused her of bringing the book with her, and exploded at her. In April 2020, Toby brutally attacked Pete Buchanan (who had been released from prison, having served a sentence for sexually abusing Toby's girlfriend, Cleo McQueen), and beat Tommy Bradshaw's abusive step-father Adrian unconscious in May 2021.
In February 2021, Doctor Ley arrived in Hollyoaks, convincing Toby to undergo another experiment in The Loft with her for her follow-up book Beyond the Red Door. However, Cleo and Celeste discovered Ley's plan and rescued Toby, with Ley being arrested for fraud by false representation (after being exposed as an unqualified doctor) and cruelty to a child.
