Sami is first seen outside of The Dog with a bag on his shoulder. He is then seen sneaking into The Nightingales home flat and searching around in drawers before almost getting caught by Ellie Nightingale and Holly Cunningham.
Revenge Plot On James Nightingale
Sami wants to get revenge on James Nightingale. He starts by dating James's sister, Ellie Nightingale. Then, he turns James's lover, Harry Thompson, into the police for the murder of Amy Barnes. when his sister Farrah Maalik's girlfriend, Kim Butterfield, threatens to reveal Sami's plan. When Kim mysteriously disappears, Sami tells his Farrah that she left her for another woman so she won't look for her. Sami convinces Harry to plead guilty to Amy's murder against James's advice. One night, Sami beats James up. Then, he turns James in for being Harry's pimp, which results in James's suspension from the firm and his family turning their backs on him. When James reveals what Sami has been doing, Ellie, who he had actually fallen for, breaks up with him. Sami asks his family to help him bring James down, but they all refuse. Sami hires Kyle Kelly to get James to fall in love with him. Sami later reveals that the ultimate plan is for Kyle to fake his death and then frame James for his murder. After Kyle fakes his death, it is revealed that Sami's motive for hating James is because James framed Kashif Maalik for a crime which he didn't commit, causing Kashif to commit suicide.
In August 2018, after incriminating James for the false murder of Kyle Kelly, his plan is discovered and goes with the police. He returns in October having been released on bail.
During the storm, Sami rescues Sinead Shelby in his car and the two have sex. He later helps her pick up her daughter Hannah Hay from nursery and the pair romp again. This time however they are interrupted by Laurie Shelby who grabs Sinead. Sami punches Laurie before Sinead reveals he is her husband. After his attempts to make peace with Laurie are rejected, Sami overhears an incriminating phone call Laurie makes. Laurie tries to blackmail Sami into helping his case but Sami is shocked when he learns Laurie has been accused of sexual assault from a woman named Georgia but Laurie insists the claims are lies.
After Imran's abuse of Misbah and Yasmine is revealed, Sami tries help mend his family and defends Imran during his police interview.
In January 2019, Sami is beaten up by Romeo Quinn but drops the charges in an attempt to help him turn his life around. After telling James to step up and be there for him, James decides not to testify against Sami, ending their feud. He later supports Imran after he reveals Buster Smith tried to sexually abuse him.
Relationship with Liberty
When Mac Nightingale attempts to trick Sami into defending him in court, Sami doubles crosses him and tells James. Sami grows close to Liberty Savage after dropping some of Kashif's belongings off at the Emporium. Liberty then discovers Sami's past music career as a boyband singer and, despite Sami's insistence to keep it a secret, reveals he is a big star in Japan and shares his music video to everyone in the village. The pair kiss after Sami saves her performance at the club and they begin dating.
At a dinner party, Liberty mistakenly thinks that Sami proposed to her and she accepted. After Sinead believed that Laurie was having an affair with Sienna Blake, he went off to comfort her where she confided in him about her marital issues. The pair shared a kiss, witnessed by Tony Hutchinson. Sami later decided to properly propose to Liberty, but Ste Hay interrupted and revealed that Sami and Sinead had kissed. Liberty rejected Sami's proposal and fled in tears. However, they later reconciled and Liberty accepted his proposal.
Sami's attempts at helping Laurie get incarcerated for raping Sinead lead to the pair further drifting apart, due to the amount of time Sami was spending with Sinead and on her case. After witnessing the pair getting close, Liberty began getting jealous and told Sinead that Sami did help with paying off Georgia. Sinead was furious with Sami, who in turn was angry with Liberty, but Sami and Liberty later made amends.
Liberty was upset when Sami missed her concert, instead deciding to visit Sinead. On the day of their wedding planning, Liberty told Sami that he was meant to be with Sinead and broke off their engagement.
Sinead asked Sami to try find the woman whom Laurie claimed was infatuated with him, leading Sami to reveal that he had already met her. Laurie wanted him to pay Georgia £10,000 in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement - he didn't pay Georgia, but someone else did as she signed an NDA.
After Laurie raped her and was arrested, Sinead sought Sami's help in getting Laurie sent down. Sinead admitted to lying to the police about the date of the attack, which she later told D.S. Jones. As a result, Sinead's statement was invalidated. Laurie was released and had Sinead arrested for perverting the course of justice, claiming that she had fabricated the whole event.
Despite his greatest attempts, Sinead was denied bail at her hearing and remanded until her trial. Sami advised Sinead to plead guilty and show remorse at her trial, as it was her best chance at receiving a light sentence. However, Sinead refused as she believed that people would think that she was lying about the rape. After Liberty repeatedly sent her several text messages, Georgia met with Sami. When Liberty informed her about Sinead's rape, Georgia decided to pursue a sexual assault case against Laurie. Upon learning this from Georgia, Sinead decided to go to court and plead guilty as per Sami's advise, and was released on bail until sentencing.
After trying to confront Laurie, he also attempted to rape Sinead's step-mother Diane Hutchinson. However, Sinead ended up pushing him over the second floor balcony of Hollyoaks High School. After learning of the incident, headteacher Sally St. Claire was able to send evidence to the police from newly installed security cameras, and Laurie was arrested for attempting to rape Diane. Sami refused to act as Laurie's solicitor, leaving him with no legal defense.
Far Right Extremism
Sami and the Maaliks end up becoming targets of the extremist organisation which Ste joined, following the death of his sister Tegan Lomax, for which he blamed Misbah for. Sami attempted to build a case against them when Amir Shirani's family was targeted. Sami was able to get a restraining order against Ste for Amir, subsequently making him a bigger target to Ste.
Sami confronted Ste, Jonny Baxter and Stuart Sumner in The Dog in the Pond where Ste racially taunted him and nearly got violent. Ste lunged at Sami, but was separated by Sylver McQueen and Jonny. Nana McQueen then threw Ste, Jonny and Stuart out of the pub. The trio later put bacon threw the Maaliks' letterbox, and Stuart's son Sid Sumner made a false allegation that Imran had threatened to carry out a terrorist attack on Hollyoaks High School. However, these were later proven to be false and the police worked out that Sid had maliciously made the allegations.
After the death of Laurie, Sinead began to defend Sami against Ste. This ended up driving a wedge between the pair, complicated by the fact they had a daughter together, Hannah. As Sinead and Hannah spent more time with the Maaliks, Ste was convinced by Jonny and Stuart to take "drastic action" - which lead to Sami being pepper sprayed in the face by an unknown attacker. Sami was left furious when the police revealed that they had insufficient evidence on the attack to make an arrest.
Following the attack, Sinead outrightly refused to let Ste see Hannah, but relented and gave him the non-negotiable terms of supervised visits with no overnight stays.
Relationship with Sinead
After his split from Liberty, Sami told Sinead of his feelings for her. Sinead was furious at his inconsiderate behaviour, considering the ordeal she had just been through, and angrily rejected Sami.
Sami later gave Sinead tickets to the Beatfields Music Festival, and accompanied her on request by Diane. Sinead and Sami ended up getting close at the festival, with Sinead purposefully missing Laurie's trial to which he received four years imprisonment. However, the prison van was involved in an accident and Laurie was able to escape and kidnap Sinead. Sami eventually spotted the pair in the village and Sinead fled. Sami prepared to attack Laurie, but Laurie collapsed and died from his head injuries from the crash despite Sinead's resuscitation attempts.
Sami comforted Sinead in the aftermath of Laurie's death, and they shared a kiss to the approval of Diane. Following the release and return of her brother, Finn O'Connor, Sami asked Sinead to move in, which she accepted so Finn could stay with Diane. Misbah was forced to lie to Aunty Kameela that Sami and Sinead were engaged so that she would approve of them living together, but the pair decided to get engaged for real. Sami's half-brother, Azim Desai, arrived to plan the engagement party and wedding.
