Raphael Loftus was a man - accompanied by his boyfriend Jeremy Fanning - who met James Nightingale at a casino in March 2022. Raphael took an interest in James when he started flashing his cash, and hung around him as James proved lucky on his bets. He mistook prostitute Luis for James's partner, who James ended up sending away. Raphael also served James with a glass of champagne which he and Jeremy had spiked. As they left, James began to feel the effects of the drugging. Jeremy and Raphael took James to a shipping yard and mugged him, leaving him barely conscious on the ground.
In March 2022, James's car was reported stolen by Verity Hutchinson, with D.I. Cohen finding a body in the boot. When Jeremy was arrested for kidnapping James's sister Juliet Nightingale, he identified the body as Raphael. James was ultimately arrested for his murder. James revealed that he tracked down Jeremy and Raphael and beat them at a game of poker, in which Jeremy stormed off before Raphael propositioned him. The pair slept together but were caught by Jeremy. Jeremy drugged Raphael with the same drug he had spiked James's drink with, before murdering him and hiding his body in Marnie Nightingale's car (which was in James's possession).
