Sir Philip 'Phil' Redmond, CBE (born 10th June 1949) is the creator of Hollyoaks. He also wrote 7 episodes in 1995, and served as a producer from 23rd October 1995 to 24th June 1996. Hereafter, Redmond became the show's series producer until 21st October 2005, with Jo Hallows as series producer (until becoming co-executive producer in 2004).
Prior to the creation of Hollyoaks, Redmond had also created various shows for the BBC and Channel 4: Grange Hill, Waterfront Beat and And the Beat Goes On. However, Redmond's pride and joy would be the Channel 4 soap Brookside, which ran from 1982 to 2003 and was closely linked to Hollyoaks, with both productions sharing resources at Mersey Television's headquarters, Campus Manor.
Redmond began working as a quantity surveyor until quitting in 1972 to work in television. He served as a storyliner for Coronation Street in 1977, until departing a short time into the job after being vehemently opposed to several storylines (such as Ena Sharples' fall whilst looking after baby Tracy Langton). However, Redmond's most notable contribution to ITV's soaps was his stint on Emmerdale from 1993 to 1994, where he was recruited to boost the show's plummeting ratings. Redmond served as a consultant to former Brookside producer Nicholas Prosser (who became the Emmerdale series producer) and devised the iconic plane crash story. Redmond departed in 1994 after executive producer Keith Richardson rejected his 'plague' idea, which was later adapted for Brookside in 1995.
In October 2020, Redmond received a knighthood.
