Michael "Mike" Barnes is the father of Sarah and Amy Barnes, the former husband of Kathy Barnes and the grandfather of Leah Barnes and Lucas Hay. Mike was a regular character between January 2006 to January 2010 and would return years later appearing recurringly between August 2016 to September 2017.
Mike arrives in Hollyoaks village in January 2006 and its quickly revealed his the husband of Kathy and the father of Sarah and Amy. Mike's early storylines revolved around his family the first being that his wife slept with Rhys Ashworth this would lead to difficulties in his and Kathy's marriage. By November 2006, Mike along with his family are left scared when Amy is involved in a car crash and is left comatose and would later discover Amy is pregnant by February 2007 when she gives birth to her daughter, Leah Barnes.
Mike would not take a liking to either of Amy's boyfriends in Ste Hay and Josh Ashworth and on separate occasions would attack the two lads and Mike would be left comatose after getting hit in the head with a rock by Josh although would survive. Mike would support Sarah throughout her break up to Craig Dean when its revealed that Craig had been sleeping with John Paul McQueen and by January 2008, Mike's marriage with Kathy would come to an end but he would begin a relationship with Zoe Carpenter.
By April 2009, Mike would be come a grandfather for the second time when Amy gives birth to her son Lucas Hay but Amy would depart for months afterwards leaving Mike to feud with Ste over his friends Abi and Daniel Raven obsession of Lucas but they would soon be found out by Ste leadj g him to apologise to Mike and by October 2009, Mike would be left heartbroken when he discovers his eldest daughter in Sarah was killed in a parachute 'accident' although would eventually find out by December 2009 that she was killed by Lydia Hart whom intended to murder Zoe and in January 2010, Mike departs the village with Zoe to go travelling.
Mike would make a return in August 2016 along with Amy and is seen getting on with Amy's new fiancée, Ryan Knight. Mike would appear sporadically and would again be left heartbroken by March 2017 when Amy is found dead by Mike and Ryan. Mike is supported by the Lomax family as well as Zoe and Kathy whom return for Amy's funeral. Mike is last seen in September 2017 when he's left in shock by Kathy when she shoots Ste who she believed was Amy's killer. Ryan was revealed to be Amy's killer and he would be killed by May 2018.
