- Martha's arrival was indirectly revealed by series producer Emma Smithwick in January 2012. Smithwick had told Inside Soap that she wanted to explore the backstories of pre-existing characters Ash and Callum Kane by introducing their wider family.
- Martha was initally meant to be a minor characterm appearing for a few episodes.
