Lucy Benson is the daughter of Juliette and Kirk Benson, and the sister of Kurt and Ollie Benson.
Biography[]
1995-1997: Relationship with Rob[]
Lucy was the second child of Juliette and Kirk Benson, born in 1978. In March 1996, Lucy caught the eye of Rob Hawthorn, the enemy of her brother Kurt. At Lucy's 18th birthday, Rob and his friend Dermot Ashton attempted to spike Lucy and Natasha Andersen's drinks with ecstacy to get them to sleep with them; Lucy didn't drink her drink, but Natasha did and died from an overdose. Rob's guilt over Natasha's death and subsequent drug use led to a breakdown in his relationship with Lucy, with the pair repeatedly breaking up and reconciling.
After befriending Carol Groves, the pair and Kurt's friend Bazz formed a band called Crazy Bazz Studs. In November 1996, Rob and Dermot decided to raid a drug dealer's lock-up. However, during the pursuit, Rob crashed the car into River Dee, killing Dermot. Lucy ended up turning against Rob and reported him to the police, but was informed that there was insufficient evidence to charge him. Lucy instead helped Kurt (seeking revenge for Natasha's death), Carol and Kurt's friend Jambo Bolton take Rob to the dealers he had burgled. The dealers ended up throwing Rob from the roof of a multi-storey carpark, leaving him seriously injured.
Bazz came out as bisexual to Lucy in February 1997 and she supported him, unlike several other villagers. After being left with a skull fracture from a homophobic attack, Lucy and Bazz decided to go to the Lake District. Whilst on a walk, Bazz fell and hit his head, requiring surgery. Afterwards, Bazz and Lucy shared a kiss and decided to begin a relationship. Lewis Richardson joined Crazy Bazz Studs, and their performance at The Dog in the Pond caught the attention of A&R representative Matt Fraser. However, things began to go south when Lucy's brother Ollie was killed in a car accident in October 1997, and Lucy learned that Bazz had been having an affair with Matt in November. Feeling distanced from her family, Lucy ended up turning to Rob.
1997-1999: Drug Addiction[]
Struggling to cope with her grief over Ollie's death, Lucy ended up taking transquilisers supplied by Rob. Lucy eventually realised that she had become addicted, but was unable to cope without them. After Rob turned to heroin, he began supplying the drug to Lucy too. As she became addicted to heroin, Rob refused to supply her, so she started going to other dealers. Rob issued Lucy an ultimatum: him or the heroin. However, after learning that his leg would need to be amputated Rob had Lucy steal £10,000 from Ollie's inheritance and the family business, to buy drugs. He gave Lucy an overdose and threatened to throw her from a car park in revenge for Kurt delivering him to the drug dealers, but Kurt managed to rescue her. Rob was supposedly killed in October 1998 after a fight with Kurt on a boat in the ocean.
Lucy continued to struggle with her addiction to heroin, and Carol convinced her to enter rehab in February 1999. Whilst there, Lucy befriended Clare, who was also a heroin addict. Clare's boyfriend, drug dealer Ty, arrived in the village and ended up getting Clare back onto heroin. Clare ended up taking an overdose and died on Lucy's bed, scaring Lucy into getting clean.
1999-2000: Rob's Return and Departure[]
After returning from Ireland to meet friend Finn's grandmother, Lucy received a call from her parents to inform her that Kurt had been killed in a jet ski accident. At Kurt's funeral, Lucy was bundled into the back of a van and taken to a nautical testing facility, discovering that Rob was her kidnapper. Rob claimed to have killed Kurt, and lured Lewis, Ruth and Kurt's friend Tony Hutchinson to the facility in an attempt to drown them all. His attempt failed when Tony managed to find an escape hatch and the quartet ended up in River Dee. Lucy, who had been knocked unconscious, was resuscitated by Tony. After Tony revealed his feelings for her, the pair begun a relationship.
However, faced with no evidence to prove that Rob had kidnapped them, the quartet tried to find a way to expose Rob, who had settled back into the village. They tried to warn his girlfriend Beth Morgan about him, only to be banned from Deva by her family. Beth ended up learning of Rob's true nature after secretly witnessing an argument between him and Lucy, and broke up with him. In revenge, Rob set fire to Finn's bus during his Millenium Eve party in an attempt to kill everyone on board (including Lucy). However, he accidentally set himself ablaze and was the sole victim of the subsequent explosion.
After being accused and cleared of Rob's murder, Lucy decided to go on an around-the-world holiday and Tony decided to come along. However, he became paranoid when Lucy ignored his advice about which countries to avoid, and even more so when researching tropical diseases. Sensing his distress, Lucy told Tony that she needed to go alone, saying a tearful goodbye to him as she left Hollyoaks for Mexico.
