Biography[]
1978-1997: Early Life[]
Kate was one of two children born to Dave Johnson and Jill in October 1978. She was separated from Dave and her twin brother Joe, growing up never knowing her father or that she had a twin brother. Jill went on to marry Mr. Patrick and adopted two children, Sol and Gina. Kate knew that Mr. Patrick was her step-father, but never knew that Sol and Gina weren't her biological siblings.
1997-1999: Arrival and Affair with Kurt[]
Kate arrived in the village in November 1997 as her mother had moved into 1 Stockton Lane with her boss and new lover Jack Osborne. Kate fell for Kurt Benson, the wife of Jack's daughter Ruth, causing a war amongst the family. When Gina witnessed a stabbing carried out by Kirsty Williams, the Williams family targeted Kate and threatened her with acid. After the trial, the Patricks decided to move away, but Jack proposed marriage and Jill accepted. They married merely weeks later and Kate brought her new boyfriend, the older Richard Morgan. The Patricks' reacted badly to Richard. Kate later discovered that Richard was married, but Richard made plans to leave his wife for her. The pair later planned to run away together but Kate realised that Richard had backed out, and broke up with him.
When Ruth went to the United States for a work placement, Kurt threw a party where he ended up kissing Kate. Kurt brought Kate to Anglesey to visit Jambo Bolton, instigating a full-blown affair. Ruth made a surprise return two months later and the pair struggled to put their affair on hold. They gave into each other and continued meeting in secret, even when Tony Hutchinson and Jasmine Bates uncovered the truth and Jill became suspicious. However, shortly before Christmas, Ruth walked in on Kate and Kurt having sex and ended her marriage to Kurt.
Kurt was left devastated but Kate was eager to continue seeing him, attempting to foil his attempts to reunite with Ruth. Ruth and Kate ended up fighting in the HCC pool, resulting in Ruth spontaneously revealing that Sol and Gina had a different father to Kate. After Kurt decided to leave Hollyoaks, Kate began contemplating tracking down her biological father.
1999-2000: Family Changes[]
Despite Jill's pleas for her not to, Kate decided to track down her biological father with the help of her friend, Finn. After finally managing to track down Dave Johnson, Kate discovered that she had a twin brother named Joe. Kate was left devastated when Dave rejected her. As secrets came tumbling out, Jill revealed that she wasn't Sol and Gina's biological mother — she adopted them after the suicide of their biological mother. Tensions exploded within the family when Gina went missing and Sol crashed a car through Store TwentyFour, leaving Jill gravely injured. Kate took her anger out on Joe, rejecting him.
Kate changed her tune and visited Dave, wanting to see Joe. However, Dave attempted to keep them apart, causing tensions between Kate and Jill. Joe fled from Dave to see Kate, until Dave finally acknowledged that Kate was his daughter. Meanwhile, Kate moved into Ruth's flat when Ruth made plans to spend a year in the United States. Ruth changed her mind and was forced to share the flat with Kate, instigating a war. Despite his relationship with Kurt's sister Lucy Benson, Joe told Kate that he had feelings for her and kissed her. Kate was left conflicted but gave in to Joe. Ruth walked in on them and soon their affair became local gossip, so Kate decided to run away with Joe. However, after one final argument with Ruth, Kate decided to leave Hollyoaks by herself.
Kate returned in April 2000 after Sol was hospitalised after an assault. She supported Jill through her marital issues, and Jill accompanied her to Joe's wedding. Upon returning, Jill confessed to Jack that she had slept with Dave and left Jack, going to stay with Dave and Kate. In October 2000, Kate returned when Jill died from a brain tumour. She remained for the funeral and befriended Taylor James before departing for good in December.
