James "Jim" McGinn was a corrupt lawyer whom worked for gangster Fraser Black, however despite this Jim was a rather good lawyer. He was the ex fiancée of Carmel Valentine who he was due to marry until Fraser murdered him after learning of Jim's plan to take him down.
Biography[]
2012-2013: Arrival[]
Jim arrived in November 2012 as the lawyer whom was the defence for Mercedes McQueen he arrives to discuss with Mercedes' mother, Myra over the chances of her not being sent down and even tells Myra that he is more than confident that he will be able to get Mercedes off. Jim later gives the jury the impression at the trial that Riley Costello is abusive towards Mercedes after Riley's death and hand to take her son, Bobby Costello to 'protect' him from his abusive father on to of that Jim manages to also get Paul Browning off the charge of the murder of Lynsey Nolan by stating Riley killed her instead and this secures both Mercedes and Browning's release.
Jim begins to attempt to impress Mercedes' sister Carmel by trying to flirt with her and things get more awkward when Jim accidentally knocks Carmel over by his car he is apologetic and takes Carmel home to ensure she gets home safely. Jim then later encourages Myra to sue the hospital after Myra is given the wrong test results. Jim then tell Browning he knows he was the one who got the tests wrong. After many failed attempts Jim finally starts to dare Carmel after Carmel punches him for thinking his a threat however the two begin an unlikely relationship
2013-2014: Criminal Ties[]
Jim's corrupt past came through after the arrivals of Trevor Royle and boss Fraser Black. Jim had clear history with the two gangsters as he often got them off charges of numerous crimes ranging from trafficking to even murder especially with the help of Superintendent Marlow whom was also employed by Frasers. When Jim came into ownership of The Loft both Trevor and Fraser attempted to get Jim to sign the Loft over to them at a price however when Trevor enlisted the help of Freddie Roscoe to set fire to the Loft witch endangered the lives of Sinead O'Connor and Maxine Minniver whom where unknowingly un the office at the time. Jim was then later arrested on suspicion of committing Arson and endangering two lives. Fraser however said he would get Jim off the charges if he signed over the Loft see no option Jim does so.
Despite signing over The Loft. Jim's business with Fraser was far from over when Jim was later forcefully put to the task of getting Fraser's daughter, Clare Devine out of prison whom already knows Jim from when she kidnapped Mercedes. Jim is threatened by Fraser to get Clare out or he will kill all his family including him and in if Jim can get Clare free then Fraser would get Trevor to leave the village since Trevor was after McQueens over Jacqui stealing from him. Jim does manage to get Clare off but Trevor still sticks around.
By January 2014, Freddie was forced by Fraser's daughter Grace Black to kill Mercedes. Later, Freddie prepares to run over Mercedes in his car however changes his mind the last minute and hits Jim instead however despite comatose Jim queried the incident and he wakes up Jim has had enough of Fraser's demands and decides to take action knowing he can't go to the police due to Fraser's high connections in the force. Jim turns to Trevor whom is currently in prison for drug dealing. Jim tells Trevor that Fraser murdered his father, Sydney Royle and this angers Trevor later on Jim and Carmel decide to leave Hollyoaks but Fraser discovers his betrayal as Jim meets with Carmel there is a crowd of partying students Fraser disguises himself and stabs Jim shocked Jim realises what has happened and soon dies in Carmel's arms. Jim would the make a brief cameo appearance in February 2014 in a video message to his fiancée, Carmel which was found by Sonny Valentine explaining how he worked for Fraser for years and how he planned to take him down and pointed out that it if the video is to be watched then he is likely dead.
