Jeremy Fanning was a man - accompanied by his boyfriend Raphael Loftus - who met James Nightingale at a casino in March 2022. Jeremy took an interest in James when he started flashing his cash, and hung around him as James proved lucky on his bets. Raphael served James with a glass of champagne which he and Jeremy had spiked. As they left, James began to feel the effects of the drugging. Jeremy and Raphael took James to a shipping yard and mugged him, leaving him barely conscious on the ground.
James went missing a few weeks later and his half-sister Juliet Nightingale attempted to find him. Searching his desk at Dee Valley Law, Juliet found Jeremy's phone number and arranged to meet him in the park. Neglecting to reveal his true identity to Juliet, he ended up kidnapping her. He blackmailed James, but James discovered his identity and sent the police to his flat. After his arrest, he identified the body found in the boot of the car belonging to James's late mother Marnie Nightingale as his boyfriend, Raphael. James was arrested on suspicion of Raphael's murder, but revealed that he had slept with Raphael after tracking down the pair and beating them in poker.
D.I. Cohen, with James having pointed out that drugging his victims was Jeremy's modus operandi, confronted Jeremy with the toxicology report. Jeremy confessed to drugging and murdering Raphael after catching him in bed with James, and hid him in Marnie's boot to frame James. In June 2022, James went to Jeremy for help with his plan to fake his death and steal his inheritance money from his family. James later attempted to back out of the plan, but Jeremy refused and kept up his end of the deal. James's £37,000 debt to Jeremy was later paid off by gangster Norma Crow.
