This editing guide is designed as a rough guide as to the expected standard of articles for the Hollyoaks Wiki. If you are new to editing and are unsure on how to get started, please refer to this page. If you need any further help, feel free to reach out to our administrators!

General Editing Notes[]
- This wiki uses British English, and the common dating method of e.g. 23rd October.
- Articles may only be created on a topic relevant to Hollyoaks.
- Once a character becomes a regular character, they will always hold this status. For example Sharon Bailey first appeared in 2021 but only began regularly appearing in 2023. Meanwhile, Lisa Hunter appeared regularly from 2001 to 2005, and made guest appearances in 2022.
Sources[]
Sourcing is very important on the Hollyoaks Wiki, as it allows us to verify various events from within the show. Some details - especially when overwriting others - may be removed if not sourced. The source is generally best placed in the edit summary.
- Sources from official Hollyoaks media such as e.g. "...seen in Episode 1234 (19th April 2004)" and "mentioned in the Hollyoaks: The Official Companion" are most favourable above all other sources.
- Information from Wikipedia is occasionally inaccurate and should not be used as a sole source. Furthermore, content should not be directly copied and pasted from Wikipedia.
- Cast lists of Hollyoaks from IMDb tend to have accuracy issues. Cast lists should not be added to the wiki unless from the episode themselves or from BFI or RadioTimes (which must be denoted in the edit summary).
Retcons[]
Retcons are commonplace for Hollyoaks, especially surrounding character ages. In such cases (see Warren Fox and Romeo Nightingale's articles for more detail), we list each conflicting mention in a character's "other information" section and follow a prioritised order:
- Birth - The Channel 4 Streaming episode transmission date (unless an in-universe date is mentioned) of a character being born or mentioned as being born on-screen.
- Celebration - The Channel 4 Streaming episode transmission date (unless an in-universe date is mentioned) of a character celebrating their birthday on-screen.
- Scene - A scene or dialogue acknowledges a character's birth date or age.
- Prop - A prop such as a gravestone, order of service, hospital record, website or ID card shows a detail on-screen.
- Non-canon - A reputable and official source that is not on-screen, such as the show's social media, official website, a magazine using information provided officially, a behind the scenes document or a documentary.
Instances of retcons going against on-screen events (such as Harry Thompson's birth in relation to Tessie Thompson's fake pregnancy story in March 1998) are treated as continuity errors. Other instances may require discussion with other editors and/or administrators.
Article Style[]
Character Pages[]
- A character's article is named after the name they are credited with, such as "Tony Hutchinson" or "Bazz". In the case of minor characters, a character without a given surname or any given name at all is credited with an actor name, such as "Kirsty (Beth MacDonald)", "Doctor (Alison Darling)" or "Woman (Rina Mahoney)".
- If a character's surname is changed in the credits due to on-screen events such as adoption or marriage, a redirect is to be created from their original name to new name - such as Juliet Quinn to Juliet Nightingale.
- A character page must be created with the character profile/list of appearance tabs at the top of the page.
- This must be followed by the 'Character Infobox' with the relevant fields filled out. The only difference will be that regular character will have an entry for "duration", whilst a minor character will not.
- Regular characters will have an "article introduction", specifying a character's full name (including middle names) and any previous names. It will also detail their immediate family (in present tense for a living character, past for deceased) and a short run-down of their storylines in the programme. This is to be in-universe and in past tense.
The article format regarding sections is different between regular and minor characters:
Regular characters | Minor characters |
---|---|
○ Biography: written in the past tense, giving a summary of a character's history in the show. This can also be accompanied by episode stills. ○ Appendices: a list of a character's addresses and occupation history. ○ Other Information: generally only appearing in the scenario of character inconsistencies such as name or date of birth. ○ Background Information: detailing information such as casting details or interesting behind-the-scenes information. ○ Introduction Sequence: a detailed list of a character's appearance in the Opening Titles. ○ Quotes: a character's first and final lines of dialogue. ○ See Also: other articles about the character, such as their list of appearances, family articles or major storylines they were involved in. ○ Gallery: a collection of images featuring the character. |
○ Unheaded biography (underneath the infobox) containing in-universe details of a character. ○ List of appearances: a list of a character's appearance if they appeared in three or more episodes ○ Notes: Any applicable notes about a character. |
Cast/Crew Pages[]
- Unlike Wikipedia, Hollyoaks cast and crew are allowed to create/edit their own articles. They must be written in third person and follow the style guide as listed below:
- Pages for cast members are only created if an actor is credited, or uncredited with dialogue. They must contain "infobox actor" at the top of the page, Hollyoaks-related details on the first paragraph, and other biographical information/roles afterwards. The only applicable categories are "Hollyoaks actors" (or the relevant production, such as Hollyoaks Later), and "Actors who have played multiple roles".
- Pages for crew members may only be created if the crew member has been credited on-screen. An image may be placed in the top-right corner, whilst a date of birth may be specified after a crew member's name. The first paragraph must consist of Hollyoaks-related details (role/s on the show and duration), whilst subsequent paragraphs may consist of biographical information and other projects. Writers and directors will also have a list of episodes they have written/directed. Applicable categories are "Hollyoaks crew" (regardless of production) and "Hollyoaks [title]" (e.g: "Hollyoaks directors", or "Hollyoaks storyliners").
Episode Pages[]
This wiki has a complete episode guide, meaning articles for every transmitted episode and known spin-off have already been created.
- For episodes of Hollyoaks, as they are untitled, episode pages are named by episode number and Channel 4 Streaming transmission date, such as Episode 1 (23rd October 1995). For editing convenience, 23rd October 1995 will also redirect here.
- Since the programme's move to streaming in September 2023, episodes transmitted since then will hold the Streaming air date, such as Episode 6382 (24th May 2024).
- Regarding instances of multiple episodes appearing on the same date: 24th March 2023 directs to a disambiguation article with a list of episodes transmitted on that date. This is for search purposes only and articles should direct to the exact episode page.
- Spin-offs - if with unnamed episodes such as Hollyoaks: After Hours - will be named by episode number and spin-off name, such as Episode 1 (Hollyoaks: After Hours). Spin-offs with seasons will include the season number, such as Episode 1 (Season 1, Hollyoaks Later).
- Episode articles must contain an infobox at the top of the page, a date/year template at the bottom (such as {{October 1995}}, and have only the following sections:
- Synopsis - a brief description on what happens in an episode, in present tense.
- Plot - a summary of each scene, in present tense.
- Cast - a list of cast from the episode.
- Music - a list of incidental music. If none is used, "None" (in italics without the quotation marks) should appear in this section.
- Notes - other notes on the article if applicable. This may include character first and last appearances, uncredited speaking characters with unknown actors, continuity/credit errors, viewing figures, and/or special behind-the-scenes information.
- Quotes - lines of dialogue from an episode if applicable.
