Episode 76 is an episode of Hollyoaks which aired on Thursday 30th January 1997.

Synopsis

Kurt, Jambo and Julie worry when Tony goes missing, but find him in hospital after accidentally swallowing the engagement ring. Ruth is horrified as Mr. Osborne tells her about his affair with Dawn and the circumstances regarding Beth. Darren attempts to fool the headteacher with a letter supposedly written by his parents, whilst Lucy and Bazz have dinner together as friends.

Plot

Tony sits on the floor of Got It Taped, destroying magazines. Darren hides a letter addressed to Mr. Osborne from Hollyoaks Comprehensive School. Tony hints to Dawn that he and Julie have split. He has decided to leave, she is concerned. Ruth worries about facing Jack, but Kurt encourages her to talk to Jack if she is worried about what happened between him and Dawn. Darren shows Max the letter that the headteacher has sent his parents, he plans on writing a letter back. Dawn tells Julie about Tony. She is oblivious to his departure. Tony sits in the hearse, trying to write a letter to his parents. Julie cannot find her engagement ring, Lucy thinks that Tony may have it. Julie is confused when she gets a phone call from Stan, informing her that Tony did not go to work.

Tony has written letters for his parents, Jambo, Kurt, and prepares one for Julie. Lucy is concerned to see that Bazz is still sleeping in his van. Kurt wonders about Dawn and Jambo, he is evasive to his questions. Jambo tells Kurt that he saw Mr. Gardner and his mother together. Julie finds Kurt and Jambo, worrying as Tony has gone missing. Tony has finished his letter to Julie. He takes out the ring and kisses it, remembering his proposal to Julie. He is startled by a man knocking on the windscreen and accidentally swallows the ring. Jambo and Kurt find the hearse, but no sign of Tony. The find the letters and open them. They panic when a man in the field shouts that "they've already taken him", and they find a medical pamphlet on the ground. They rush to the hospital.

Mr. Osborne informs Dawn of what Ruth discovered, she thinks that they're still having an affair. He thinks that he should tell Ruth the full story, and risk her telling Celia. Jambo and Kurt arrive at the ward but find Tony's bed empty, and worry that they're too late. They are thrilled when Tony emerges from around the corner. Darren writes a letter, pretending to be from his parents. He recalls that Celia uses the word "myopic" and decides to use that when Max points out that calling Mr. Butterworth "thick" seems out of character for his parents. Tony tells Kurt and Jambo that he saw Julie kissing Bruce the motorbike instructor. He thinks it's a punishment for what he did in Ibiza. Jambo thinks that Tony tried to kill himself by choking on the ring, but he reveals that it was an accident. He has to stay in hospital until the ring passes. Jambo and Kurt remind Tony that they're his friends and he can open up to them.

Darren has re-written the letter to include Mr. Osborne's kidney operation and also writes that Darren will be on holiday and will not be in school for the next week. Darren tries to encourage Max to write a letter pretending to be Angela so he can get a week off school. Julie arrives at the hospital and Jambo and Kurt reveal what Tony told them. Bazz and Lucy have dinner together. Kurt tries again to encourage Ruth to see Mr. Osborne. Ruth confronts Mr. Osborne. He tells her the full truth. He says that Dawn was confused after her parents divorce, and that he and Celia were distant and almost split up too. Ruth is unsympathetic and makes her disgust clear. She is dumbfounded to learn that Dawn got pregnant by Jack and gave birth to a girl, Beth. Dawn's family kept her pregnancy a secret and the baby was adopted. He reveals that the operation was a kidney transplant for Beth. Ruth is horrified to learn that Celia does not know anything. He says that he won't stop Ruth from telling Celia, but she needs to make a decision. Ruth storms off.
