Plot
As Joel stands in front of Billy, he starts to remember what happened.
- One Year Earlier
Leela can tell that Joel's keeping something from her, but he acknowledges that she's also keeping something from him, as she's changed ever since the night in the woods. He texts a dealer for drugs. Mercedes has her colonoscopy in the afternoon. Sally's flown out to Alicante to teach English. Meeting with his drug dealer, Joel earns himself a punch from them. It's his father, Warren Fox! Maxine meets Dodger in his car, where he justifies why he doesn't to meet her in The Dog in the Pond as he keeps a close eye on Rex. Warren tells Joel that he's planning to return to Ecuador tonight with Mercedes and the twins. Joel tells him that Mercedes has a hospital appointment today. Mercedes tells Leela she's being checked for bowel cancer. When she knocks Leela's bag on the floor, a pregnancy test falls out. Leela tells Mercedes that she was raped the night of Theresa's party and doesn't want Joel to know, especially if she's pregnant and the baby isn't his.
Arlo comes across Warren outside the hospital. Warren pays Arlo £30 to hand over a note that he's going to write Mercedes. Joel suffers a moment of weakness back at 2 Oakdale Drive and makes a fresh arrangement for drugs. Misbah has the results of Mercedes' colonoscopy; she has a high-risk polyp and they need to run more tests. Upon leaving the room, Mercedes rings Freddie. Rex checks in on a comatose Ste. Leela does a pregnancy test and is shocked at the result. Freddie bumps into Warren outside the hospital. Warren explains to Freddie that he's got Arlo to play mailman for him and is going to return to Ecuador with Mercedes and the kids. Freddie makes clear that Mercedes is doing fine without him, but Warren doesn't care about Freddie's opinion. Freddie pays Arlo £50 to reclaim Warren's note from him and then heads inside the hospital to console a devastated and terrified Mercedes, ignoring a text from Grace.
Warren waits outside in his van, but no one shows up. A drugged up Joel heads to a party, where Billy and Tommy also are. As Freddie returns to the village, he's told by Grace and Rex that Lexi's been taken to hospital. Dodger continues to watch Rex from a distance and then makes a call to someone, stating he's located her person responsible and needs to get into their inner circle. Warren accepts that Mercedes and the twins aren't coming to him and leaves. At the party, Billy demands £20 from Tommy, getting nasty with him and calling him a useless man. In his drugged-up stupor, Joel stands up for Tommy. Billy calls him a dirty junkie so Joel punches him, flooring him and leaving him unconscious.
