Synopsis
Leah says her goodbyes to the village. Mercedes receives bad news regarding her treatment plan. JJ collapses before court, and is dealt a shocking diagnosis.Plot
Mercedes prepares to receive the results of her chemotherapy treatment, and promises to call John Paul from the hospital. John Paul gives her a CD made by friends and family to help her through the day, but Mercedes says she feels positive. Frankie tells the family she spent the night drinking. Jack informs her he thinks he got through to JJ the day before. Leah tracks down Dillon and calls their one-night-stand a mistake, but states she doesn't want her baby raised by strangers. Dillon is cross she broke their pact, claiming it would be easier if he didn't have to see his son every day. JJ, who appears unwell, asks Jack if pleading guilty will result in a lighter sentence. JJ asks what prison is like, but Jack promises to visit and encourages JJ to be brave. Leah arrives at the courthouse to wish Frankie luck and say goodbye, calling her the bravest person she's ever met.
Mercedes calls John Paul from the hospital and keeps him on speakerphone. Misbah informs Mercedes that the most recent course of chemo did not shrink the secondary tumour as expected, but tells Mercedes about a particular type of chemotherapy producing encouraging results, which she will try to source despite a UK shortage. Mercedes hangs up on John Paul, and asks how long she has without this treatment. Misbah informs her she has possibly a year, and Mercedes begs her to source to the drug. JJ collapses inside the courthouse. Leah arrives at the hospital to say goodbye to Ste, who is holding her baby. Ste tells Leah he is proud of her for going to university in San Diego. Leah informs Ste and Leela of her decision to call her baby James, before Leela tells Leah it's time to go, and she and Ste exchange "I Love Yous".
JJ is placed in an ambulance, as the family discuss his collapse. Jack believes he may have taken drugs due to the pressures of court, whereas Frankie thinks he's faking. Darren is reluctant to accompany JJ to hospital, so Jack does so. At home, Mercedes receives a call from Misbah, who tells her she cannot obtain the ideal chemo drugs. Apologising, she offers alternative treatment, but Mercedes hangs up and cries on the stairs. JJ wakes in hospital, shocked to see the family surrounding him. He tells Frankie this isn't how he wanted today to go, that he was going to tell the truth. Frankie doesn't believe him, and becomes distressed, shouting her life has been ruined by him, and now he's refusing to face up to what he's done. Darren interrupts her, having entered the room with Misbah. Misbah informs the family that tests were ran on JJ on admittance. Darren reveals that the cause of JJ's collapse is leukaemia.
Mercedes stands in front of a mirror, without her wig, and removes her dressing gown. She looks at her body, and touches her port-a-cath, ostomy bag and surgery scar. Appearing defeated, she cries. Looking at a photo of herself and her twins, she smiles, regains her composure and plays the CD, laughing at the "Show Cancer No Mercy" message written across it. The first track starts with a humorous but uplifting message from Freddie and Grace. Mercedes then skips to the second track, chosen by Freddie, and sobs, smiles and dances to the music.Cast
