Synopsis

Mitchell tries to come to terms with the events of his birthday party.

Plot

Present Day

Toby demands that Martine says something. He asks Martine to tell the truth and she runs off. Celeste is annoyed with Toby but he makes clear that he is unapologetic.

2000

Toby lies on the floor staring at the ceiling as CCTV cameras watch his every move. He notices footsteps under the door and races over to sit on his bed. Doctor Ley walks in with breakfast for Toby.

Present Day

Mitchell and Toby almost fight, which is separated by Walter. Toby ignores Celeste telling him to stop as he continues to try wind Mitchell up. Mitchell furiously demands to hear from Martine if Toby is telling the truth or not. Her reaction confirms the truth for Mitchell and Walter demands that his family return home to discuss things, refusing to allow Scott to go with them.

2000

Toby sits on his bed and watches television. There is a knock on the red door - it's Celeste. They meet for the first time, only hearing each other's voices.

Present Day

Martine gets upset as Mitchell furiously confronts her over why she lied. Martine says that it never felt like the right time to tell him. Walter suggests talking later once everyone has had the chance to calm down, but Mitchell demands answers now. Martine agrees with Mitchell, so long she can have time to get her head together. There's someone else who needs to hear this too. Celeste is still annoyed with Toby. Goldie tells Scott about Shane taking her to see a horror film on their first date about twins that had been separated at birth; one turned out fine but the other was evil. She wonders which one of Mitchell or Toby will be more evil. Goldie tries to bribe Scott into telling her everything that happens. Mercedes remembers giving up Bobby, and hopes that Martine and Toby could get to the stage that she is at with Bobby. Scott informs Toby that Martine wants to see him. Celeste tries to talk him out of it but Toby goes anyway.

Walter wants to give him a hug but Toby refuses. Mitchell is furious to discover that Walter knew and didn't tell him anything. Toby demands that Martine tells him everything. She tells them that she discovered that she was pregnant at five months. Walter stops Martine from saying that it was too late for an abortion, giving her a chance to rephrase. Toby asks why she kept Mitchell, Martine reveals that it was their dad's plan for both of them to be adopted. Martine refuses to tell Toby his dad's name. Walter is shocked when Martine admits that she considered a termination. Toby wonders why she would have brought shame on the family as it was only 26 years ago, but Martine points out that she was unmarried, her father was a pastor and her mother the first lady of a church. This sparks an argument between Walter and Martine in which Mitchell tells Walter to not try make himself look like the good guy. Martine says that their dad convinced her that they would be better with someone else, and he took over. He told Martine that there was a doctor who would do better than they ever could. She revealed that she went into premature labour, Mitchell had problems breathing and there was a chance that he may not survive. Toby gets annoyed and Martine says that she thought that she was only doing what was best. Toby tells Mitchell that he had a lucky escape. He blames Martine for his miserable childhood and leaves.

Toby vents to Celeste, and there is a knock at the door, it's Lisa who demands to speak to Toby. Lisa tells Toby that if he was honest, she would have helped him. She wants to tell Toby about her childhood. Mitchell is furious with Walter and Martine, will never forgive them. Toby is intrigued to hear about Lisa's childhood. He wonders how she couldn't hate Margaret. Celeste says that her parents never stopped looking for her, unlike Martine with Toby. Lisa tells Toby that they're family so he can open up to her when he wishes to. Celeste says that Toby doesn't, but Toby says that he does. Scott visits to make sure that Mitchell is OK. Scott tries to comfort Mitchell. Toby tells Lisa about his childhood. Lisa sympathises with him and asks if he's seen Doctor Ley since. Lisa says that she wishes that someone was there to help him. Toby says that there was.

2007

A letter is passed under the door to Toby. It reads "If you wany answers, you'll need this." Inside is a key to the red door.

Present Day

Celeste taps on the glass. Lisa goes to comfort Toby but Celeste throws her out. Toby is annoyed with Celeste for throwing her out. Celeste says that now, they don't go full throttle. Martine prepares to tell Mitchell more. Celeste tells Toby to close his eyes. She presents him with a birthday cake with two candles.

2007

Toby searches through an office and finds a book written by Doctor Ley called "The Red Door", it is a test on a hypothesis about nature vs nurture with dizygotic twins. Toby smashes the office in a rage. In the mess, he finds a photograph...

Present Day

Martine shows Mitchell the photograph. She tells him that there's one more thing before he takes it. Celeste wishes Toby a happy birthday and he blows out one of the candles. Martine unfolds the photograph fully, revealing a third child - a girl. Celeste blows out the other candle. Toby wishes her a happy birthday.

2007

Celeste and Toby watch as the house burns down - there is no sign of Doctor Ley. They look at the photograph and leave.
