Synopsis

Brendan and Walker have a final showdown on the side of a railway, with fatal consequences. Will is stunned when he learns that the agency has no record of an "Ellie Harper".

Plot

At 2 Oakdale Drive, Brendan watches Ste sleeping safely on the sofa after his traumatic ordeal. Brendan looks at Ste's phone - it's 8:56 am on Tuesday 19th March 2013 - and Ste's phone wallpaper is a photograph of Brendan, Leah and Lucas, which gets a momentary smile from Brendan. Brendan opens the front doors of his home and is backlit by the sky light outside.

Meanwhile, at 3 Oakdale Drive, Flat 3, Will and Texas look at a wedding venues brochure. Leanne comes downstairs and nods to greet Texas, who blanks her, resulting in an eye roll from Leanne.

Brendan stands on the city steps, looking at the village. He takes a deep breath as Ste joins him outside. Ste appears to be angry at him, and they go back inside. A police car is parked up on Oakdale Drive, as D.I. Milner and his colleague pull up alongside it. Ste tells Brendan that he's starving as he walks to the kitchen. Seamus asks if Brendan slept, and Brendan tells him that sleep is still something he's looking forward to, with Seamus feeling the same. Seamus wonders if any of this is really happening as Brendan stares blankly at him. Cheryl comes downstairs and kisses her father good morning. Ste asks Cheryl where she keeps the bread - to which she replies it's kept in Price Slice because she's not a domestic goddess. Brendan answers the door to D.I. Milner, greeting him with little enthusiasm. He enters the house and informs the Brady family that Simon Walker has escaped.

Will insists that Texas consider booking somewhere for their wedding soon, but she wants to hand in her assignment before deciding. Will suggests he'd like to get married in a castle, but Texas says they're cold and full of ghosts. Will then proposes having a hog roast at Camelot, with a bit of wheelchair jousting. Leanne pipes up, questioning that they're leaving it late because all the good places will be booked. Texas goes to leave for college as Ellie arrives at the door. Ellie acknowledges the police presence outside.

Cheryl asks D.I. Milner if he thinks Walker will come back for them. The police aren't ruling anything out. Seamus encourages the police to pull their finger out, pointing out that Walker is one of them. Milner corrects him that Walker "was" one of them. Milner leaves, promising to update them when he can. Brendan makes sure Milner knows that Walker will only stop once he gets what he wants. Ste refuses to hide in the house all day because he has a business to run. Another knock at the door panics Cheryl - but it's just Nate with flowers for her. Brendan, Ste and Seamus flee the scene, but not before Seamus gives Nate an evil look.

Texas arrives at the cemetery. She takes a bunch of flowers to India's grave and almost disturbs a hooded man - Walker - who is crouching in front of Cameron Walker's grave.

At Carter & Hay Delicatessen, Ste tries to give Ellie the hot beverage she has ordered for takeaway, but she's distracted by all the drama outside. Leanne tells Ellie about how the psycho the police are after locked Ste in a fridge. Leanne thinks Ste should be at home resting, but Ste's not keen to let her play boss. Ellie catches Leanne on the way out, asking if Will has spoken to her about her ongoing problem with Texas. Leanne suggests he might have done but doesn't elaborate. Ellie tells Leanne that Will has been upset by it, and it's starting to hinder his recovery. Leanne falsely says she's sorry about that. Ellie mentions that Texas might be too stubborn to make the first move in making up and invites Leanne to a special lunch that Will is preparing.

Cheryl asks Brendan why he won't tell her what happened yesterday. He avoids the question with humour. Cheryl thinks Brendan and Seamus are getting on a lot better now - but Brendan excuses it as something that happens when you stare death in the face. Cheryl tells Brendan that Seamus is in his bedroom as Brendan heads out to "lock the club". After a brief pause, he ensures Cheryl knows he loves her. She loves him too and asks if she can accompany him to the club, but he makes an excuse. Brendan asks Cheryl to go "easy-ish" on Nate. As Brendan leaves, Cheryl goes over to Nate, who apologises for what he said about Seamus. Cheryl recaps that Nate accused her father of abusing children. Nate explains that Brendan alluded to something, and he got the wrong idea and wants to put it behind them. Cheryl wants to thank him for saving her yesterday. She's not yet ready to move forward, but thanks him for the flowers and suggests he leave. He says he knew he loved her but, until yesterday, had no idea how much. The thought of losing her terrified him. He'll do anything for her except give up on her. They kiss. Nate's confused, as he's not good at reading signs, and asks if that was a "good" kiss. Cheryl briefly takes offence at Nate's wording but confirms it was a good kiss, not a goodbye kiss. Nate has one more request...

Back at the cemetery, Texas mourns India. Walker asks her what happened to her sister. Texas says she was murdered by Silas Blissett. Texas vaguely recognises Walker, having seen him around the village. She walks over to Walker and continues their deceased sibling discussion by asking what his brother was like. Walker says he was a good kid - smart, funny and everybody loved him. As Texas tries to end the conversation and depart, Walker adds that Cameron came to him for help, and he let him down. Texas refers to it as survivor's guilt, something she knows all too well. Walker continues venting to Texas - he stands up, removes his hood and mentions another person who died - Riley Costello - adding that he killed him. Texas is frightened and learns that he is Walker. Walker knows her name.

Brendan enters a portacabin, gloved up to avoid leaving fingerprints. He notes a mattress on the floor and a makeshift kitchen area, giving him the impression this is where Walker has been living. He then walks over to a wall covered by a large piece of fabric and rips it down to reveal a collage of photos, maps and newspaper clippings that all centre around Brendan. These include photos of Brendan, Cheryl, Declan, Nana Flo and articles about Danny Houston's corpse, Silas Blissett's kills, Warren Fox's arrest and Cameron Walker's tragic turn at The Idyll. Brendan furiously examines the exhibit.

Atop the archway, Cheryl and Nate look over the village. Cheryl points out how she hates seeing the village like this, which leads Nate to ask how she ended up here. Cheryl explains that she followed Malachy Fisher, her childhood sweetheart. Nate jokes that he has a rival and feels awful when Cheryl explains that he died. Cheryl continues that she has lost a lot of people since arriving here. Nate suggests that's a good reason to leave, but Cheryl is set on her dad buying The Dog in the Pond so that they can work together. She's not declining Nate's offer of moving away - just not yet. Nate asks if Cheryl is happy here, but Cheryl is just tired of losing people. Nate thinks nothing can stop them from making a new home, free from bad memories. Cheryl thinks about it silently and rests her head on his shoulder.

Back at Walker's portacabin, Brendan douses everything in flammable liquid. He receives a phone call from Ste, and tells him now isn't a good time. It becomes apparent that Texas has told Ste what Walker has said to her, and Ste is worried that Walker will harm the kids. Leanne is supporting Texas inside the deli. Ste tells Brendan that Walker left a message for him, that he wants to meet him alone, where his brother is buried. As another police car pulls up in the village, Ste is scared that Walker will never stop coming after them. Brendan agrees. Ste permits Brendan to do whatever he needs to stop Walker, asking him to be careful and telling him he loves him. Brendan says he loves Ste too as he hangs up and throws a lit lighter onto the flammable liquid in the portacabin, ensuring all of Walker's documents linking Brendan are destroyed.

At home, Will and Ellie prepare lunch, as Will wonders if a meal is enough to fix Texas and Leanne. Ellie feels Leanne might surprise him - thinking about their earlier conversation. Ellie notices a Savage family photo on display on a shelf. Going over for a closer look, Ellie points at Dodger and asks if he is Will's friend. Will says it is his brother, Dodger, clarifying that his real name is Mark. Looking longingly at the photograph, Ellie remarks that they look like a close family. Will changes the topic to ask about starting additional physical therapy, but Ellie suggests it's early days. Will insists he doesn't want anything to get in the way of him and Texas getting married.

As Brendan pulls up in his car to the cemetery where Cameron is buried, he is on the lookout for Walker. As he nears Cameron's grave, he hears a motorbike approaching in the distance. A helmeted Walker lifts his visor, and the two make eye contact, with Walker suggesting he wants Brendan to follow him. Brendan rushes back to his car and gives chase to Walker.

Texas and Leanne arrive home for Will's special lunch, where he has set three places at the table. Texas is not in any mood after her encounter with Walker, as Leanne continues to support her. Leanne explains the situation to Will, as Texas takes over with the details, recounting how he wanted her to pass a message to Ste. Will shows sympathy and asks if she is okay. Texas doesn't feel up to eating, but Ellie insists Will has been working hard all morning cooking their favourites, emotionally blackmailing them into having lunch with Will.

The chase continues as Walker lures Brendan further away. As they become parallel to each other, Brendan attempts to knock Walker off his bike. Walker speeds off ahead and parks up. He removes his helmet and disappears on foot. Brendan drives slowly, trying to find him, and sees his abandoned motorbike. Brendan gets out of the car and suspects that Walker has headed for the railway track on the viaduct above them.

Cheryl and Nate return home, and Cheryl announces that she is moving to Derry with Nate. Seamus is visibly angry and wonders about the pub plan. Nate insists he doesn't want to come between them, but he loves Cheryl and wants to make her happy. Cheryl asks for Seamus' approval, and he reluctantly gives his blessing. She says they're leaving on Friday.

Texas notices that Will has her phone. He tells her he has downloaded a GPS app to keep track of her wherever she goes. Texas feels uncomfortable about this, but he insists it's for her safety because he feels "useless" whilst using a wheelchair. She thanks him. Will receives a phone call from his support worker agency. Texas apologises to Leanne about their argument, and they agree to forget it. Texas explains why she went to the cemetery, as she wanted to share her wedding talk with India. After his phone call, Will gets Texas and Leanne up to speed - the agency doesn't know anybody called "Ellie Harper".

On top of the railway viaduct, Walker waits for Brendan. As Brendan approaches, Walker welcomes him to his day of reckoning. Brendan says it's a shame, as these last few months, he has heard voices telling him to atone for his sins. He's tried, but Walker kept coming. He wonders if the world wants him to be a God-fearing man or a man who knows who he really is. When Walker asks for his answer, Brendan says, "I miss the old me". Walker laughs, and the two begin a physical fight. Brendan drops Walker to the ground and punches him, and Walker unleashes some martial arts on Brendan before grabbing him in a headlock and knocking him to the ground. Walker kicks a disorientated Brendan "for Cam" and punches him "for everyone that you've hurt". He hits him again "for me" and pins him to the side of the railway as he informs him he's left a last-minute parting gift for Brendan's family, which will tear their lives apart. As Brendan's face is held sideways, he notices a train approaching in the distance. As Walker gives a speech about ending Brendan, he delivers his final words, "Brendan Brady", as Brendan kicks him in front of the moving train. As the train moves past Brendan, he stays to the side until it passes and then experiences a surge of adrenaline as he processes what happened.

At the cemetery, there is a bunch of flowers laid on Cameron's grave with the note "Sleep tight little brother, I miss you".

Notes

General

  • Andy Smart served as the stunt co-ordinator for this episode.
  • Hollyoaks was censured by Ofcom for Walker's death scene, concluding that the scenes were unsuitable to be shown pre-watershed and insufficient measures were taken to ensure the scene complied with broadcasting code. However, Channel 4 argued that due to there only being one complaint about the episode, finding the scene in breach of the broadcasting code would be "an unreasonable and disproportionate restriction on Channel 4's right to freedom of expression".
  • This episode was not made available on Channel 4's streaming platform with the rest of the 2013 drop on 15th September 2023. The reason for this omission is likely due to the controversy mentioned above. An extended plot summary has been provided due to this situation.
