Synopsis
Barney takes Carmel to the Christmas Eve ball, ready to admit his true affections, but will a conversation overheard by Mercedes thwart his plans? Brendan snaps at Leah whilst out to lunch with Seamus, Cheryl and Ste and makes her cry.Plot
Carmel has doubts about the Christmas Eve ball as she thinks she'll feel out of place. Theresa offers to help Carmel out and goes through her wardrobe, finding Rhys's belongings inside. Ste's offended by Brendan's disinterest in spending time with him and the kids, but Brendan stresses it's because of his father being around. Mitzeee decorates Chez Chez, having agreed to host the Christmas Eve ball for the HCC whisky society. Carmel hands Mercedes a Christmas card from Jim before begging her to attend the ball with her. Seamus invites Ste and Leah to have drinks and a meal with him and Brendan upon learning that Leah is Ste's daughter.
The electricity cuts out at Chez Chez once the decorations are up. Brendan struggles being around his father at the meal, but it's Leah who gets the brunt of his built-up anger. Barney's mesmerised by Carmel in her stunning dress. Brendan leaves the meal early to help Mitzeee out with the electrics, confiding in her about his father. Mitzeee encourages Brendan to talk to Cheryl and Ste. Afterwards, she's left irritated when Mercedes arrives with Carmel and Barney at the ball. Brendan apologises to Leah for shouting at her. In the toilets at the ball, Barney tells Rob that Nana was paying him to see Carmel. They're unaware that Mercedes has heard them from outside, and when Mercedes sees Barney with Carmel shortly after, she quickly takes Carmel away from him.
Brendan reads Leah a story. Mercedes breaks the news to Carmel about Barney in the office of the club, but everyone hears their conversation because of the microphone on the table. Carmel's heartbroken when Barney doesn't deny that Nana had been paying him and runs off, being struck round the corner by Jim's car as he drives through the village. Jim picks Carmel up and puts her in the back of his car. Seamus is keen to make a go of things with the family and tells Cheryl he's going to stick around. Once back at her flat, Mercedes gets a knock on the door - it's Doctor Browning. John Paul stands outside 26 Leigh Road with his bags.Cast
