Dr. Marland was a doctor who met with Malachy and Mercedes Fisher in September 2009. Malachy nervously explained that he and Mercedes wanted to try for a baby, but he was HIV positive whilst she was HIV negative. Dr. Marland worked out that the pair were inquiring about sperm washing. Dr. Marland informed the pair that sperm washing does prove to be successful, but also makes conceiving difficult and is not covered on the NHS. Upon learning that the treatment could cost £3,000, Mercedes and Malachy were divided on whether to proceed.
