Douglas "Doug" Carter was the son of Connie and Herb Carter, as well as the civil partner of Ste Hay. He was killed in a bomb explosion in October 2013 after Sinead O'Connor unintentionally brought a bomb to a party at the council flats where Doug was, which Clare Devine had intended to detonate inside The Loft. Doug was one of the people killed in the blast.
Biography[]
2010: Arrival[]
Doug arrives in September 2010 initially part of the new student regime along with the likes of Jamil Fadel, Leanne Holiday and Lee Hunter. Doug meets Charlotte Lau and Dave Colburn and takes them on a trip too France and supplies them with drugs but while high on drugs Charlotte takes a fall and damages her spine, Doug also later meets both Leanne and Jem Costello and Doug ends up kissing both of them but begins to date Jen whose father, Carl Costello takes an instant disliking towards Doug. When Doug arrives in Hollyoaks village he quickly finds himself starting to sell drugs for local gangster Brendan Brady but ends up taking them instead which prompts Brendan to cut ties with Doug later Doug has a drug overdose and is taken to hospital and is threatened by Carl to leave other wise he will have Doug back in hospital in no time, Doug agrees to move back to America.
2011: Return & Settling in Hollyoaks[]
Despite Carl's threat, Doug returns to Hollyoaks in January 2011 in an attempt to put things right with the people he has crossed, Doug befriends both Riley Costello and Ethan Scott as well as Leanne and Texas Longford he ends up moving in with Ethan but Doug is soon put up to a task by Texas who begs Doug to supply her with some drugs as she cannot cope with saying good by to her sister, India Longford during her funeral this leads Doug to approach Brendan to sell him some drugs in which Brendan does so and while Texas is high on drugs Doug ends up sleeping with her but when India's funeral comes along Doug finds Texas high on drugs and does his best to help her however Texas refuses Doug's help. By March, Doug finds himself being forced by Brendan to set up his friend Rae Wilson for possession of Cocaine however Doug does not go threw with it despite Brendan's threats later on Riley takes Doug to a party and the two drink heavily but both of them still get into Riley's car and drink drive but Ethan pulls the men over but before reaching the car Doug quickly swaps places with Doug so Riley's Footballing career is not put on hold but when Carl attacks Doug thinking he could have harmed Riley, Riley confesses he was the one driving not Doug.
By April, Doug manages to bump into his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Massey whom is posing as "Jenny Houston" in order to con money from Warren Fox as she's working with Brendan Brady to do so. Doug is surprised to see Jenny but happy not soon after Doug finds out of Rebecca's scam of Warren and Brendan however knowing how dangerous it is to scam guys like Warren and Brendan, Doug agrees to help Rebecca as they can use the money and start a new life away from Hollyoaks however Doug's plans to start a new life with Rebecca are soon over when Rebecca is murdered after trying to scam serial killer, Silas Blissett, Doug is devastated and blames Brendan but is threatened by Warren. Doug is pleased when both Warren and Brendan are arrested for Rebecca's more so for the latter but is soon quickly left angry when both men are released. In order to get over Rebecca and move on Doug ends up on a date night with Ruby Button whom has lied about her age and her whole identity, Doug ends up kissing Ruby by the end of the night and ends up taking a drunken Ruby back to his flat where he soon discovers who she actually is Doug then takes her home to her grandparents Jack and Frankie Osborne.
By the time Riley's wedding to Mercedes McQueen is soon approaching Doug finds out from Riley's younger brother, Seth Costello that Mercedes has been having an affair with Carl but things get complicated for Doug when Warren forces him to come clean over a secret Seth is hiding prompting Doug to tell Warren of the affair soon afterwards Warren threatens Doug not to say anything to any in order for him to blackmail Carl and on the day of the wedding the secret is outed, Warren then punches Doug for instigating the reveal, Riley is then left furious with Doug for keeping quite but soon forgives him.
In November 2011 after the whole village had thought Brendan was the serial killer after he was caught near Rae's body months prior Doug along with the rest of the villagers are shocked to learn its in fact Silas after Silas accidentally killed his own daughter, Heidi Costello after thinking she was Lynsey Nolan, Doug apologises to Cheryl Brady whom he blamed for Brendan supposedly killing all the girls after all the affair drama by December Doug meets a girl named Jodie Wilde whom Doug ends up going on a date with but Doug is left saddened when Jodie refuses to go further as she can tell Doug is not over Jenny and top of that Doug faces Christmas alone as his friends Leanne and Texas are due to spend it with their respective families, depressed, Doug finds a photo of Jenny and climbs on top of a bridge where he jumps off into the water below, Doug is the shown visions by a deceased Steph Roach who tells him her name is "Angel Steph". Steph shows Doug how his changed the life of his loved ones and what impact he has had on them Doug then sees Jenny also who gives Doug an ultimatum to weather to live or die. Doug is then revived by paramedics, Doug who is more positive invited half the village to his Christmas dinner and decides to move on from Jenny and get on with his life.
2012-2013: Relationship with Ste Hay[]
At the start of 2012, Doug starts a friendship with Ste Hay and the two decide that they should go into business with one another however their first attempt does not end well therefore the two decide that they should get a loan to open a Deli in the middle of the village however they met with another set back when both Doug and Ste are declined by their respective banks for a loan this leads to Doug to ask Brendan without Ste knowing to loan him the cash so he and Ste can open the Deli, Brendan does so and Doug and Ste open the new business The Deli and the two begin to grow closer with one another but Doug starts to develop feelings for Ste this is first clear when Ste hugs Doug leaving Doug stunned. When Doug helps Ste set up a dating profile, Doug's friend, Leanne clicks on that Doug is jealous despite Doug telling her his not and knowing this Leanne purposely gets Doug and Ste to do a role play of Ste's date when Ste goes on his date with a guy named Adam, Doug is devastated and sleeps with Texas. Later in Doug goes out his way to ruin Ste's date with Adam and during an argument Doug gives Ste the impression that his falling for him, Doug is pleased when Ste and Adam break up this leads Doug to properly confess his feeling to Ste and the two end up in a relationship with one another however they soon break up when Brendan tells Ste he loaned £80,000 to Doug to set up their business but Doug and Ste reconcile after Ste messes with Brendan's feelings in order to pay off Doug's debt.
Doug and Ste's love continues to grow stronger and the two end up getting engaged to one another but in the lead up too the marriage, Doug soon becomes a bit paranoid of Brendan presence around Ste later on Doug is approached by Simon Walker whom is revealed to be an uncover officer after this Doug is enlisted by Walker who wants revenge on Brendan over the death of his brother Cameron Walker to get any evidence of Brendan that could help to get Brendan sent down for good and knowing Brendan is a threat towards his relationship and future with Ste, Doug agrees to do so but Doug is unaware that Walker plans to murder Ste by shooting him dead and after this is revealed and Riley is caught in the crossfire and dies Doug contacts Walker's former boss in Shawnee Hudson and tells her he will still get evidence on Brendan to bring him down as Doug is still jealous of Brendan and Ste's bond and worries Ste will opt with being with Brendan instead. Even though he fails when confronting Brendan, Doug tries again and its revealed that he had tricked Brendan by having two phones, Doug managed to get Brendan to confess to the murder of Danny Houston in order to protect Ste later on however Doug marries Ste and Ste ends up finding doing the recording of Brendan's confession Doug is confronted by Ste whom is furious however Ste is accidentally struck by a bus driven by Maddie Morrison and the wedding ends in disaster when the bus crashes into the venue and the whole accident takes the lives of Rhys Ashworth, Neil Cooper, Maddie herself and Martin Johnson. Doug is heartbroken at the disaster and even more so when Ste is comatose however Doug is supported by Brendan, Ste survives and Doug temporarily gets back with Ste but when Doug has to go back to America to help support his mother due to his father having Parkinson's disease, Doug realises that Ste is in love with Brendan seeing that Doug gives Ste a ticket to Dublin surprising Ste, Doug tells him to be happy before boarding the flight.
Doug returns to Hollyoaks months later and now into 2013 and heads back to work at the Deli he supports Ste when Brendan is arrest in March for four murders. Doug is also left heartbroken when his friend Texas is murder by Will Savage in May on their wedding day although Will was not outed until November. Doug is surprised by Ste when Ste tells Doug that he wants to sell his share of the Deli in order to buy the local club, Chez Chez, Doug is later on left furious when he discovers that Ste is using the Deli to sell on drugs to customers and students alike this leads to Ste quitting the Deli. Doug supports Ste when Ste along with Tony Hutchinson when Ste helps his mother Pauline Hay die. Doug finds out that Danny Lomax is Ste's biological father and gives him the ultimatum to tell Ste and Doug also helps Ste when Ste finds himself in trouble with Trevor Royle, Doug attempts to pay Trevor what Ste owes him but this does not get Trevor to back off and when Ste is arrested for possession of drugs, Doug attempts to get Jim McGinn to help but Ste refuses the help from Doug when Ste returns he is thankful of Doug paying Trevor and they end up reconciling their relationship and get engaged again in order to escape from Trevor's wrath the two opt to leave and start a new life in America and end up throwing a leavers party and during the party Doug has doubt as he feels Ste is still in love with Brendan but Ste convinces Doug that Brendan is in his pass now however bothered Doug and Ste are unaware that their friend, Sinead O'Connor steals a bag from Trevor thinking it's a huge bag of cash however it's a bomb Trevor had gotten for Clare Devine in order for Clare to kill Mercedes with her family and later on Clare detonates the bomb thinking it's still at The Loft and blows up the council flats where Doug and Ste's leaving party is and tragically Doug dies along with Leanne Holiday and Ash Kane and this leaves Ste heartbroken that he lost another person he loved.
