DCI Dale Jackson was a police officer who began investigating a series of murders in the village in February 2003. Dale's colleague, Will Davies, asked Dale to move in with him and his children. Will's daughter, Abby, started to see Dale as a "mother figure", but his son, Ben, wasn't confident that Dale moving in was the best idea. Ben and Dale ended up sleeping together, but Will insisted that it didn't bother him. Dale told Will of her feelings for him and they began a relationship, despite Ben's advice. Will and Ben had an explosive argument, in which Will threw Ben out of the house. Will and Dale's relationship didn't last long as Dale was fired by the commissioner, and decided to leave the village.
