D.S. Yates was a police officer who arrested Goldie McQueen for violating her bail conditions after she got into a fight with her cousin, Mercedes McQueen. After receiving a note from the mystery serial killer, D.S. Yates released Goldie and held a press conference in an attempt to draw more attention to the killer. He later questioned Breda McQueen over Louis Loveday's disappearance, but ended up releasing her.
D.S Yates investigated the collapse of Maxine Minniver, due to drinking dodgy vodka, but accepted a bribe from the culprit, Liam Donovan. D.S. Yates also accepted a bribe from Liam to get Mercedes released from drug possession charges, after she was reported by Lisa Loveday.
D.S. Yates later investigated the attack on Terry Hay, and arrested Terry's step-son, Ste, when Terry named Ste as his attacker. Ste, in retaliation, reported Imran Maalik for assault, for which Imran received a caution. He also arrested Cindy Cunningham when she was framed for breaking into Mac Nightingale's house, and arrested Breda after shopkeeper Walter Deveraux reported her for stealing from Price Slice.
When Mac was murdered, D.S. Yates questioned several people, and made Mac's grandson, Romeo Quinn, the prime suspect. Mac's killer, Breda, attempted to frame Romeo's father, James Nightingale, for Mac's murder, but planted the transquilisers used to poison Mac in Romeo's jacket by mistake, resulting in Romeo's arrest. Romeo attempted to go on the run, and D.S. Yates put out a warrant for his arrest. D.S. Yates attempted to find Romeo, but Romeo eventually turned himself in after his girlfriend, Lily McQueen (whom Romeo was going to go on the run with), collapsed and died from sepsis caused by self-harming. He charged Romeo for Mac's murder, but Romeo was later exonerated.
D.S Yates also investigated the hit-and-run on Grace Black. He accused Harry Thompson of the crime, as the culprits had stolen his car and Harry had no alibi. Romeo initially gave Harry a false alibi, but admitted it was fake and Harry was arrested. Farrah Maalik became suspicious of Liam, and made an anonymous phone call before she left for Canada. Liam paid D.S. Yates to remove the call from the system, which D.S. Yates eventually did. However, D.S. Yates was caught and fired from his job.
Several months later, D.S. Cohen investigated the shooting of Mercedes. Liam was prime suspect, and his lawyer, James Nightingale, accused D.S. Cohen of police harassment. He told her that "Mr. Yates" would be willing to testify in a court of law, that the police had a personal problem with Liam.
