Carmel Celine Marguerite Valentine (née McQueen) was the daughter of Myra McQueen and Ricky Boland, the sister of Michaela McQueen, the half-sister of Niall Rafferty, Jacqui, Mercedes, Tina, John Paul, Carmina McQueen and Richard Boland, and the wife of the late Calvin Valentine.
Biography[]
1987-2006: Backstory[]
Carmel is born to parents Myra McQueen and Ricky Boland. Carmel grew up being the younger sister of Jacqui and Mercedes and the younger sister of Tina, the older sister of John Paul and Michaela. However Carmel along with the rest of her family where unaware of their long lost brother, Niall. Carmel from age has always followed a catholic religion.
2006-2008: Arrival & Relationships[]
Carmel is first seen in June 2006 when she's spotted by Darren Osborne who spots her talented singing voice when she performs at the SU Bar however Carmel is unaware of peers being around despite her sister, Mercedes warning her so. After the events of The Dog in the Pond Explosion which leads to the deaths of both Mel and Sophie Burton, Carmel bags herself a job at the local beauty salon, Evissa, and Carmel soon finds her self fancying Jake Dean but is disheartened when their date goes from bad to worse after a confrontation between Jake's ex, Becca Dean and her boyfriend Justin Burton. Carmel tells Jake that they're best off just being friends afterwards.
Carmel finds herself falling in love with immigrant, Aleksander Malota, who is due to marry Carmel's older sister, Jacqui, despite her best efforts only to fall in the arms of Alek, Carmel finally does so when Alek comes clean on the real reason why he's marrying Jacqui, so he can move to the country, Carmel wastes no time in beginning an affair but when Jacqui and her mother, Myra, find out they are both furious with Carmel and Carmel is left heartbroken when Alek departs for his him country and despite trying her best efforts and attempts to fly out Carmel has no choice then to let Alek go.
Carmel has a brief bit of feeling developed towards Mercedes' ex-husband, Russ Owen after he supports her by offering to talk about Alek's departure like Alek, Carmel does her best not to act on her feelings as it would cause a ripple throughout the family home and an incident occurs when both Carmel and Russ have another heart to heart in Carmel's younger brothers, John Paul's room however only this time a d both Carmel and Russ are unaware they are being slowly poisoned by carbon monoxide which makes the two pass out on one another but the McQueens manage to break the door and fund the two of them lied on one another making Mercedes furious both Carmel and Russ are put in a coma but they manage to survive and wake a few days after the incident.
Carmel along with Frankie Osborne read some Horoscopes and the one chose for Carmel is that she will find love very soon and it's someone who is 'related to number 3'. Later that day Carmel manages to drop her ring down a drain but Calvin Valentine comes to her help when he manages to get the ring back as he leaves Carmel is left blessed and notices he has the number 3 on his shirt after telling Frankie that she's attracted to Calvin and they begin dating but Carmel starts to feel she's betraying her friend, Louise Summers since she's Calvin's ex fiancé but Louise is due to marry Warren Fox so Carmel feels she's doing the right thing but when Louise is nearly killed in a fire in Evissa that was started by Ste Hay, Carmel starts feel a tad neglected by Calvin but despite this Carmel and Calvin begin a serious relationship.
Carmel hits Calvin with the thought she is going to phone the police force but Calvin helps her in succeeding and when Carmel manages to pass, Calvin proposes to a delighted Carmel albeit a total accident on Calvin's part and on the day of the wedding Calvin gives Carmel a scare when he does not turn up right away dur to raiding The Loft however afterwards Calvin shows up and the two of them marry. They return from the honeymoon and Carmel is unaware that Calvin is feeling too much guilt over 'killing' drug dealer Nige Foster. After a row with Calvin over his sister Lauren and after Calvin goes away, Carmel writes a note telling Calvin that she's gone away to a Spa break but this is not true as Carmel along with the rest of her family have been kidnapped by Niall Rafferty which ends with Niall keeping the whole McQueen family hostage in an abandoned Church one which he blows up which ends up killing Carmel's sister Tina Reilly which devastates Carmel and the rest of her family.
2008-2010: Difflculties with Calvin[]
Months after Tina's death Carmel's marriage with Calvin is a rocky one as she's still unaware that her husband is feeling guilty over a supposed murder and when Carmel agrees to buy some condoms for teen couple and sister in law Lauren and her boyfriend Newt. Carmel buys the condoms but is left embarrassed when Calvin finds them but is left furious when Calvin accuses Carmel of having an affair with his boss, Mark Gascoyne, despite her pleas and telling Calvin they were in fact for Lauren, Calvin throws her out despite this.
Carmel finds herself back in the McQueens home where she ponders on her marriage to Calvin and comes to the conclusion that she and Calvin should just get a divorce since they can't trust one another and after Carmel is shocked when told by Calvin to a supposed murder of Nige in February 2009, eventually it comes out that Warren was paying Nige to stay away and make it look as though that Calvin killed him by May 2009, Carmel is left distraught when Calvin reveals that Warren killed Louise as well as Sean Kennedy. Carmel confronts Warren who later supposedly dies in a fire started by Clare Devine.
Carmel helps Warren's autistic foster brother Spencer Gray deal with his grief over Warren and Calvin is impressed by her support and when Russ takes his son Max Owen, Carmel sees Russ depart but decides against stopping them but Carmel's mind goes elsewhere when Calvin tells her that he saw Clare in The Loft on the day Warren had died however despite this Carmel gets back together with Calvin and Carmel supports Calvin when he tells both Sasha and Spencer this.
Carmel finally comes clean to Jacqui about letting Russ leave with Max and this results in Jacqui falling out and disowning Carmel but while Carmel is coming clean to her family Calvin bottles telling the Police about seeing Clare and leaving Warren this prompts Carmel to then end their relationship once more buts Jacqui does come round to forgiving Carmel and on top of that Spencer gives Carmel her job at The Evissa back as well as doing other jobs like working as a cheerleading coach at Hollyoaks High School and working part time as a PCSO and working in The Loft also making her be around Calvin more so this makes Carmel and Calvin become close again and do their very best to help fight off their real feelings towards one another.
2010-2011: Calvin's Death[]
Carmel falls for Calvin all over again despite them getting a very quick divorce however Carmel is unaware that Calvin has been sleeping with her sister, Mercedes, Carmel tells Calvin of her real feelings towards him and his pleased and feels the same way and thus causes him to end his lust with Mercedes, Carmel unknowingly confides all the a disheartened and a revengeful Mercedes when Carmel tells her that Calvin actually left Warren to die in The Loft and Mercedes tells Sasha as revenge for Calvin dumping her, Calvin is furious with Carmel and again their relationship is called off as a result.
Carmel reveals how much she loves Calvin through however despite him calling it a day but eventually the two decide they feel to much feelings and decide to get married for the second time but Carmel is upset with Mercedes who tells her she won't be attending unaware of the real reason of Mercedes not wanting to actually attend and the day finally arrives and all seems to be going well until Calvin goes missing and Sasha reveals to all the guests that Calvin left Warren to die this prompts Carmel to order her to leave and makes it known that no one will ruin their wedding but Carmel manages to track him down in Evissa where she finds him talking to her cousin, Theresa McQueen to which Theresa tells Carmel that's she's pregnant but Carmel is oblivious to the fact that Calvin is indeed the father of her baby the wedding goes head but tragically Calvin is shot dead by Theresa who was left furious with Calvin for telling her to get an abortion. Carmel is seen sobbing over Calvin's body.
Carmel's heartbreak does not end as Cheryl Brady informs her of Calvin sleeping with Mercedes this results in Carmel in confronting Mercedes and slapping her and tells her that she wants nothing more to do with her not long after Carmel gets a false alarm when she thinks she is pregnant with Calvin's baby but that's not the case. Carmel is left worried and disheartened that Theresa wants an abortion but she manages to stop her from going through with having the abortion a month goes by and Theresa's friend, Anita Roy, tells Carmel that there is a gun in the Loft panicked Carmel informs Jacqui who removes the gun and replaces it with a hairdryer quickly and plants the gun on Gaz Bennett who is then arrested for Calvin's murder but when Carmel tells Theresa that they finally have Calvin's killer Theresa defends Gaz and this leads to her confessing to Carmel that she in fact killed Calvin.
On the day of Calvin's funeral however Gaz's name is cleared of Calvin's murder when the police find fingerprints on the gun belonging to Kyle Ryder as he used it for a robbery weeks or days before Calvin's murder when Carmel hears this she pushes Theresa for answers and is taken back when Theresa tells her that she and Calvin had slept together and on top of that that Calvin is in fact the baby's father and Carmel feels further betrayed when she discovers that Jacqui and Mercedes knew of Theresa murdering Calvin and helped cover it up and Carmel is saddened to learn that the Valentine's along with Spencer are due to depart the village they have a leaving party and Carmel says her goodbyes to them all.
Carmel has a brief spark with Brendan Brady and the two end up kissing however nothing further comes from them briefly dating despite Brendan wanting Carmel to import drugs for him to which she agrees. Months later she's shocked to discover that Warren Fox is in fact alive and well having survived the fire a year previously, Carmel faints after seeing Warren. In January 2011, thanks to Warren, Kyle escapes prison but Brendan twist his mind into getting the truth about who murdered Calvin under the assumption it was Warren who killed him and in February 2011, Kyle kidnaps Theresa and Carmel along with Theresa's boyfriend at the time Ethan Scott manage to track him down but Kyle seems hell bent on revenge but is eventually killed after his gunned down by Warren. Afterwards Carmel tells Theresa to put it all behind them.
2011: Converting into a Nun & Father Francis[]
After the demise of Kyle Ryder. Carmel visits a church where she sees the ghost of Calvin who encourages Carmel to keep faith and be happy after this bizarre encounter Carmel turns to God and decides she wants to become a Nun and begins training to become one but Carmel is left tempted after she meets a guy who calls himself, Father Francis, Carmel is instantly attracted to Father Francis and is left embarrassed when he rejects her when she attempts to kiss him but is unaware that Father Francis is also attracted to her.
Carmel is finally left stunned when Father Francis kisses her more than once wasting no time in the moment Carmel kisses him back but afterwards starts to feel she's betrayed a Nuns beliefs however despite feeling guilty Carmel still spends more time with him and begins to help him with a charity fund raising dance competition but when Father Francis asks her if she would be willing to leave her be behind I'm order to start a relationship and to have a trip to Uganda but Carmel gets the impression that Calvin's spirit was sent to test Carmel's loyalty towards being a nun and decides not to go with him to Uganda and despite having a change of heart Carmel misses him as he boards the flight.
Carmel is pleased when Father Francis returns some weeks later but she's soon left unimpressed with Father Francis when she discovers that he kissed her friend and boss Cindy Cunningham, Carmel is shocked to learn from Father Francis that he is in fact a conman who cons women for their money but his fallen for Carmel. Carmel forgives him and they decide they should start a new life in Uganda but Carmel tells Cindy about the truth of him and this leads to Cindy calling the Police and as Carmel is about to leave with Father Francis they are stopped by The Police and Father Francis is arrested. This leaves Carmel disheartened by his arrest and departure.
2012-2013: Accident & Relationship to Jim McGinn[]
Months after all the Father Francis drama, Carmel sees herself entering a local beauty competition but her younger sister Michaela makes fun of Carmel's skin complexion this makes Carmel want to tan herself and she uses Michaela's tanning lamp which catches fire and blows up on Carmel's face as a result Carmel is taken to hospital where she has a face scar from the accident but is saddened to discover that her scar will be permanent so much that Carmel turns to suicide and approaches the hospital roof intending to jump from the top as Carmel thought she only had her looks to keep her from being unique but Lynsey Nolan manages to talk Carmel out from jumping off and committing suicide.
Carmel struggles to actually go out of the hospital this leads Ally Gorman to help Carmel by introducing some of his old army friends whom have all lost limps however Carmel is grateful but is still embarrassed by the scar on her face this leads Carmel to go stay with, Nana McQueen for a good few weeks to clear her mind of any Ill thoughts when Carmel returns she starts a brief relationship with Barney Harper-McBride but it turns out Nana paid him to do so this leaves Carmel embarrassed and ashamed.
Carmel meets a lawyer, Jim McGinn and is left with a sour taste in her mouth when Jim attempts to flirt with Carmel later Carmel accidentally runs into Jim's car this leads to Carmel accidentally punching but when Jim takes her home, Carmel offers to take him for dinner when Carmel is upset to see that her accident has made front page of a magazine she agrees to go on an actual date with Jim after he asks her too however Carmel is left unimpressed when she finds out that the date is at The Dog and Jim has already started eating before and just as she shows up this causes Carmel to leave in a hurry but feels guilty when Jim arrives to pick her up in a Limousine as it was part of his plan to trick Carmel but they start a relationship.
When Carmel spots Jim holding a butch of flowers, Carmel accuses Jim of dating another woman but Carmel is again feeling guilty for jumping to conclusions when Jim reveals that the flowers are in fact for his mother after Carmel feels her feelings growing for Jim and it's clear that she is falling in love with him and when Jim is about to leave the village Carmel tracks him down and stops him confessing her feelings towards him. Carmel begins to work at The Club along with her sister Mercedes when both of their partners, Jima and Paul Browning buy half of share each but Carmel is unimpressed to discover Jim is actually a silent partner and does her best to let Jim give her more say in the club all the drama leads to a catfight between Carmel and Mercedes on the reopening night which they later make up for.
When Jacqui tries to con Trevor Royle he begins to terrorise the McQueens and the villages this included Jim to which he signs over his share of the Loft to Trevor after being forced to do so by Fraser Black, Carmel is furious with Jim not only that her mother Myra had to fake her death in order to escape Trevor and Browning as they were out to murder her and Carmel is left unintentionally injured when her Nana and Theresa stage a Robbery, Carmel is further furious when Jim tells her that his being forced into letting Clare out of prison this upsets Carmel as Clare tried to kill Mercedes earlier on in the year after Clare is released she tries to kill Mercedes and her family which includes Carmel during a 30th birthday party but the bomb is moved by Sinead O'Connor to a different location to which Clare detonates but leaves the McQueens untouched, Clare is then killed by Browning following a fight with Mercedes.
After all the drama dies down Carmel starts to become suspicious of Jim's odd behaviour so Carmel enlists Theresa help rummage through her and Jim's things where Carmel discovers a letter from Jim's doctor informing him that he has Chlamydia this leads Carmel into assuming that Jim is now having an affair or at the very least sleeping about with other women and after trying to confront Jim, Carmel throws him out but when Theresa tells Carmel that she got Chlamydia when she slept with Calvin, Carmel then comes to the realisation that she is the one who has it and was the one who in fact gave it to Jim, Carmel feels guilty and forgives Jim and the hospital confirms Carmel has Chlamydia and has had it for a number of years and because of this its left Carmel infertile.
Carmel eventually turns to Chloe Chance to be her surrogate and Jim is all for the idea however after an argument with Theresa and Carmel goes to attack her. Cleo sees this and decides to back out of being a surrogate for Carmel to Carmel's devastation. Carmel gets revenge on Theresa when she tells Theresa's boyfriend at the time, Dodger Savage that Theresa has been sending email from his ex Texas Longford email.
2014: Jim's Death and Sonny's Revenge[]
In January 2014, Carmel over the new year has contacted Calvin's younger brother Sonny who is now himself a Detective the reason being that Carmel wants Sonny to help get custody of Theresa's and Calvin's daughter Kathleen-Angel McQueen. During the same month unknown to Carmel, Jim has double crossed Fraser who later murders Jim by stabbing him as a result Jim dies in Carmel's arms who is distraught and is shocked to discover that Jim had been involved with dangerous gangsters like Trevor Royle and Grace Black, Grace even taunts Carmel who slaps Grace in response but Sonny gets Carmel off an assault charge.
On the day of Jim's funeral, Carmel finds it hard and flees abs Sonny follows her they have a heart to heart which then leads to the two of them kissing with Theresa now in prison after Sonny arrested her for murder not long after returning, Carmel along with Sonny start to look after Kathleen-Angel but Carmel starts to become attached to her when she develops a motherly bond with Kathleen-Angel. By April 2014, Carmel discovers that Fraser was the one who murdered Jim.
By August 2014, Carmel is left on edge when Theresa sends a visiting order to see Kathleen-Angel and despite Sonny's comforts Carmel continues to worry about Theresa's unwanted presence still unaware of Sonny's plan that he wants Kathleen Angel all to himself and wants all The McQueens to pay for their involvement in Calvin's death and when Myra returns she orders Carmel to let go of Kathleen-Angel and give her back to her rightful mother in Theresa this infuriates Carmel and leaves the village temporarily with Sonny but is heartbroken at her family been torn apart.
When Carmel returns she starts to notice Sonny's odd behaviour around The McQueens and after Phoebe may have killed Sonny after a heated confrontation, Carmel goes to the place where it took place but there is no Sonny in sight and when Carmel sees a video of Sonny threating Nana but realising that Theresa would then be released from prison Carmel throws away the evidence but after Myra finds out and scolds Carmel for what she did Carmel goes back and retrieves the evidence and hands it in to the police where then Theresa is released. Carmel visits Nana and is heartbroken to find out that Sonny actually tried to kill her and after a showdown with Sonny, Carmel leaves for a few weeks after managing to get away from Sonny by pushing him over.
In November 2014 weeks after her encounter with Sonny and managing to get away, Carmel returns to Hollyoaks but not with a mystery when Carmel is seen in a fit of panic entering Dee Valley Police Station asking for help Carmel the reunites with her family who were worried about her but is a shock twist its revealed that Carmel is in fact working with Sonny in order to abduct Kathleen-Angel and on the day of her cousins, Porsche' wedding to Lockie Campbell. Carmel puts her final plans into action with Sonny but despite this Carmel at the last minute has a change of heart this causes Sonny to be angry and start shouting at Carmel which causes her to go back to the wedding which is now taking place on a Train later after a car chase with her father, Patrick Blake, Sienna, crashes her car on the railway which causes the train to crash Carmel is then confronted by Sonny amongst the debris as the two argue Sonny holds Carmel back as a gas tank explodes this leads to Carmel dying around her family causing devastation, Sonny also dies as a result.
In February 2017, Myra gave birth to a baby girl, who she named Carmina McQueen, after Carmel and Tina. In July 2024, Mercedes gave birth to fraternal twin girls, naming one of them Maria-Carmela McQueen as a tribute to Carmel.
