←2001 2002 2003→ |
2002 was Hollyoaks's eighth year of production.
Overview
2002 saw an uncertain future for Hollyoaks: despite Channel 4's decision to renew the contract for the programme, executive producer Phil Redmond was left enraged by the cancellation of Brookside and threatened to pull the programme. However, Redmond's outlook for the programme changed completely in 2003, with Redmond claiming to have learned from the mistakes that lead to Brookside's axing.
This year saw the show's first serial killer, whose identity was kept secret in a whodunnit storyline. The Dean family were introduced in November 2002, whilst Jamie Nash and Theo Sankofa were killed in a potholing disaster later in the month.
Other stories included Laura Burns's obsession with Mandy Richardson becoming dangerous, the arrival of the missing Ellie Hunter, Norman Sankofa becoming homeless after the death of his brother, a custody battle between Alex Bell and Anna Green over their son and Adam Morgan becoming wheelchair-bound after a car accident.
Actor James Redmond decided to leave the role of Finn in late 2001 in favour of becoming a presenter, with the character departing in January 2002. Lesley Johnston (Laura Burns) quit the role to become a midwife, and Ross Davidson (Andy Morgan) quit after expressing his disapproval of a lack of stories for his character, resulting in Eve White (Sue Morgan) and Kate Baines (Beth Morgan) also departing.
2002 also saw the show break the Guinness World Record for longest on-screen kiss, with a kiss scene between Ben Davies and Ellie Hunter lasting three minutes and fifteen seconds, a record which wouldn't be beat until eleven years later in 2013.
