Synopsis[]
Mandy shares her concerns about Darren's behaviour, and something strikes a chord with Kyle. Cindy’s attempt at stand-up comedy doesn't go down well.
Plot[]
Darren watches his family. Mandy gives him a kiss on the cheek. Darren thinks in his head about society saying that a "real man" must keep their emotions hidden, but nowadays, a "real man" is one in touch with their emotions. He thinks about feeling useless some days, but about "staying in the race" to see if things get better the next. He thinks that things aren't getting better. Nancy is suspicious to return home to find that Kyle had tidied the house. Kyle reveals that he and Nancy could get married in 10 weeks. Nancy is surprised, she thinks it's too soon. Kyle wonders if Nancy is having doubts and Nancy ends up changing her mind, she likes the idea.
Mandy tells Darren that they need help for his open mic night. Darren complains of feeling unwell. Mandy is concerned about Darren. He tries to give her reason not to be. Nancy reveals to Mandy that he and Kyle are marrying in ten weeks. Nancy is surprised to learn that Darren is ill and wonders about him as he seems off. Kyle is interested in hearing about everyone complaining about Darren. He makes an excuse and leaves, saying that Cindy can fill in for him. Cindy says that she could do stand-up if she wanted, and is determined to get on stage when everyone calls her unfunny.
Ella is concerned for Darren. Kyle knocks at the door and Darren tells Ella to ignore it. Ella ignores him and lets Kyle in, to Darren's annoyance. Kyle confronts Darren. Darren tells kyle that he can leave if he's going to be another person to say that Darren isn't sick. Kyle says that he thinks Darren doesn't have a cold, not that he isn't sick. He tries to get Darren to open up to him. Kyle asks if he's spoken to anyone, Darren asks who he moans to about feeling "under the weather"; his terminally ill best friend, or Mandy...? Kyle says that Darren is being too hard on himself. Darren says what he has to be happy about in comparison to everyone else. Kyle says that he thinks Darren has depression.
Cindy gets annoyed with the lack of enthusiasm about her stand-up act, and resorts to insulting the audience. She wonders what the audience is doing at an open mic night at a restaurant during the middle of the week. She starts off with a couple, suggesting that they have marriage problems. She suggests that two women are on daily release from a nursing home. When Mandy tries to stop her, Cindy says that Mandy hates not being the centre of attention, and for everyone to lock away their husbands, which Nancy and everyone else find amusing.
Kyle opens up to Darren about "his roommate" in rehab, who suffered from depression. Darren is surprised that Kyle has been in a rehabilitation clinic. He tells Darren that he was in rehab for drug addiction. Kyle says that he faced up to his issues, and asks Darren if he's willing to face up to his. Darren thinks Kyle is right about him having depression. Darren begins to open up to Kyle but starts to shut himself off when Kyle asks about his thoughts. Kyle encourages Darren to tell him. Darren thinks that he's a failure, and tells Kyle that they've known each other long enough to see Darren cheat on his wife and "mess up" with his kids. Darren says that he used to think people would laugh with him, and has now realised that they're laughing at him.
Jack sings at the open mic night. Nancy makes a booking for the engagement party. Cindy asks if she's invited, and Nancy says that she was thinking of asking Cindy to get up on stage and say a few words. Cindy asks if she was really, to which Nancy says no to Mandy's amusement. Nancy says that she wants to spend the rest of her life with Kyle. Cindy says that she wishes that she could spend the rest of *her* life with Luke, not his. Cindy admits that she feels uncomfortable when Luke jokes about his illness, she thinks it's his coping mechanism so she keeps quiet. Mandy is concerned to hear nothing from Darren.
Darren asks Kyle how his friend dealt with his depression. Kyle says that he "faked it 'til he made it". He says that he used to pinch the back of his hand too. Nancy tries to comfort Mandy. Kyle offers to keep the conversation between them. Kyle says that he'll send Darren a message. Darren will send one back so he knows that Darren is OK. Kyle informs Darren about the wedding. He says that he didn't have anyone else to tell. Darren hugs Kyle. Kyle thanks him, but Darren properly thanks him. Kyle promises to not tell anyone. Luke and Cindy kiss. Mandy returns home to find a note from Darren, apologising for today but vowing to do better tomorrow. Nancy returns home but there's no sign of Kyle. Darren researches clinical depression. Kyle sends Darren a text, and Darren responds. Sitting on the City Wall, Kyle smokes a cigarette. He puts the cigarette down and pinches his hand as he gets upset, thinking.
