As of recent, new users have been adding an 'LGBT characters' category to articles. This category was phased out a number of years ago as it seemed to lack any purpose (was not part of the category tree) and was not maintained correctly.
It is most preferrable that a discussion is raised when there is a desire for a new category to be added as the introduction of a category requires up to 3,000-4,000 pages to be checked over.
A few mini-discussions have been held, and the reasons given that this category would make a good re-addition is that it makes searching for representation in Hollyoaks easier - every LGBT regular and guest character is all in one list in an easy-to-read format. Wikipedia has a list of LGBT characters in soap operas, but the list for Hollyoaks is mostly incomplete.
A reason why adding this category is in question is - how useful would it actually be? When the category existed, it was hardly ever used and kept accurate. Categories lay at the bottom of an article page in a box which is collapsed by default whilst the character's infobox and biography - towards the top of the page - informs you of their partners and identity. It is also unlikely that this category will be accessed directly from outside of the wiki, such as through sites like Google, especially as the top results are lists of LGBT characters in Hollyoaks.
If this category was to be implemented, how do we determine which characters receive this category, in instances such as Craig Dean who identified as straight despite dating John Paul McQueen, and Sienna Blake who has not revealed what sexuality she is.
